Our History

MacDermid Enthone integrates the proud history of two great businesses.

Enthone dates back to 1930 when the company was started in a small garage on a residential street in the U.S. city of New Haven, Connecticut. Its founders were three men from very different fields – Jacob F. Buckman, an auto-body shop owner; Walter R. Meyer, a chemist with General Electric; and F.A. Abbiatti, a lacquer salesman – who shared a common dream: to build a dynamic new chemical company.

After growing steadily during its early years, Enthone’s business took off during World War II. Since being incorporated in 1946, the company has expanded significantly, and today has locations around the world producing high-performance technology solutions for the world’s leading manufacturers and OEMs.

In 1999, Enthone was acquired by Alent plc. Alent has a global presence in more than 40 countries and sells into more than 100 countries. Soon after, in 2015, Alent was acquired by Platform Specialty Products, and the Enthone business was integrated with MacDermid into MacDermid Enthone.
